The Bleeding Heart Tetra is recognized by its heart-shaped red spot in the center of the body. Native to the Amazon, it is one of the most ornamental tetras, with elongated fins in males.

Peaceful and gregarious. Lives in medium-sized schools in calm waters with dense vegetation. Males display elongated dorsal fins.

Omnivore. Accepts flakes, pellets and live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
Breeding
Oviparous. Egg scatterer among fine-leaved plants. Soft, acidic water for breeding. Eggs hatch in 24–36 h.

Prefers soft, slightly acidic water. Tannins from dried leaves are beneficial. Moderate lighting.
