About
Massive knife fish with ocelli (eye‑shaped spots) along its body. One of the largest freshwater ornamental fish. Frequently sold as a 10‑15 cm juvenile, with buyers unaware it can reach 1 meter. ONLY for hobbyists with huge setups.
Behavior & Temperament
Large predator, territorial and aggressive toward other knifefish. May be docile with fish too large to swallow. Nocturnal, actively hunts at night.
Feeding
Voracious carnivore - fish, shrimp, krill, fish pieces. May accept large pellets. Feed at night. Eats large quantities.
Breeding
Spawns on hard surfaces (logs, rocks, glass). Male guards the eggs and fans them. Reproduction recorded in large aquariums.
Care Notes
Tank of 1000+ liters REQUIRED. Very powerful filtration. Extremely reinforced lid (they’re strong and jump). Large hiding places. NEVER buy on impulse. Fast growth.
Compatibility
Predator — swallows any fish that fits in its mouth (very large in adults). ONLY with very large fish. Often sold as juveniles without warning about adult size.
