The Coral Red Pencilfish is considered the most beautiful of the genus Nannostomus. Males with two red stripes alternating with black and white. Discovered in 2000, it quickly became one of the most sought-after.
Behavior & Temperament
Generally peaceful, but males are territorial toward each other. Males display two intense red stripes.
Feeding
Omnivore. Tiny foods: brine shrimp nauplii, microworms, cyclops. Very small mouth.
Breeding
Oviparous. Extremely difficult in captivity. Requires very acidic, soft water.
Care Notes
Extremely soft and acidic water (ideal pH 4.0–5.5). Heavy tannins. Mature aquarium.
Compatibility
Only with microfish. Males need space for territories. Ideal as a species-specific setup.
