Helostoma temminckii
Water Parameters
About
Large gourami renowned for its “kiss” behavior (actually a strength contest between males). Its thick, protruding lips are used to scrape algae. Available in pink (captive variety) and green (wild).
Behavior & Temperament
The “kiss” behavior is actually a territorial dispute between males. It can be aggressive, scraping the mucus off slower fish. It requires ample space.
Feeding
Omnivore/Herbivore - algae, vegetables (lettuce, spinach, peas), spirulina, flakes, pellets. Scrapes algae from surfaces with its fleshy lips.
Breeding
Floating egg scatterer. Does not build a bubble nest. Eggs float and hatch in 24-48h. Parents do not care for the fry.
Care Notes
Large tank with robust vegetation. A vegetable‑rich diet is required. Abundant natural algae are beneficial. Powerful filtration for the bioload. Secure lid.
Compatibility
Semi‑peaceful with similarly sized fish. May irritate slow‑moving or flat‑bodied fish when it tries to scrape its mucus. Avoid very small fish.
