About

The Scat, or Green Scat, is a tall, rounded-bodied fish with a pattern of dark spots on a green‑silver body. Like the Mono, it is often sold as a freshwater fish, but it requires progressively higher salinity as it grows. Extremely hardy and voracious, it is an excellent algae cleaner.

Behavior & Temperament

Active and sociable schooling fish. Peaceful despite its size. Juveniles can tolerate fresh water, but adults need brackish to marine water for optimal health.

Feeding

Omnivore with herbivorous tendency. Scientific name (Scatophagus = feces eater) reflects detritivorous habit in the wild. In aquariums: vegetables, algae, flakes, pellets, brine shrimp and frozen foods.

Breeding

Oviparous. Does not reproduce in home aquariums. Spawns in the wild in coastal marine waters.

Care Notes

IMPORTANT: Adults require brackish (1.010‑1.020 SG) to marine water. The spines on the dorsal and anal fins are venomous—handle with care. Excellent algae eater. Gradual salinity transition.

Compatibility

Compatible with other brackish fish: monos, archerfishes and datnoids. Social in groups. Avoid very small fish that could be swallowed accidentally.
