Bala Shark
Balantiocheilos melanopterus
Water Parameters
About
The Bala Shark is often sold young (5–8 cm) without warning that it will reach 35 cm. Its silvery body with black-edged fins gives it an elegant appearance. Unfortunately, many aquarists do not have adequate tanks for adults, making it one of the most returned fish in the trade.
Behavior & Temperament
Active and nervous fish that may jump out of the aquarium when startled. Despite its common name, it is peaceful with similarly sized fish. It requires plenty of swimming space.
Feeding
Omnivore. Accepts flakes, pellets, brine shrimp, daphnia, shrimp, earthworms and plant-based foods. Voracious appetite as it grows.
Breeding
Oviparous. It does not reproduce in home aquariums. In the wild, it migrates to spawn. Commercial breeding uses hormones.
Care Notes
NOTE: Grows VERY large and needs a 500+‑liter tank when adult. Keep the lid tightly sealed because it’s a jumper. Keep in a group. Do not purchase without an appropriately sized tank for its adult size.
Compatibility
Compatible only with large, robust fish. Small fish may be swallowed when the Bull Shark reaches adult size. Keep in groups of 5 or more to reduce stress.
