About
The largest callichthyid commonly kept in aquariums. Very hardy, survives in low-oxygen water thanks to aerial respiration. Popular in artisanal fishing in the Amazon. Invasive species in some regions outside its native range.
Behavior & Temperament
A robust, peaceful catfish that tirelessly scours the substrate. It breathes atmospheric air at the surface. Males are very dedicated to building and guarding the nest.
Feeding
Voracious omnivore - pellets, wafers, brine shrimp, bloodworms, food scraps, insects, earthworms. Eats practically anything it finds in the substrate.
Breeding
Builds a floating bubble nest using plant fragments. Male aggressively guards the nest. Produces a large spawn. Easy to breed.
Care Notes
Spacious aquarium with sand substrate. Floating vegetation for nests. Secure lid (opens to the surface to breathe). Very easy to maintain. Tolerant of varied conditions.
Compatibility
Peaceful with larger fish. May intimidate very small fish due to its constant activity. Good with medium cichlids and other robust catfish.
