About

The Emperor Angelfish is one of the most spectacular ocean species. Juveniles display a pattern of blue and white spirals on a dark body, while adults exhibit horizontal yellow and blue stripes with a dark facial mask. The metamorphosis between patterns is one of the most dramatic transformations in the marine animal world.

Behavior & Temperament

Majestic and territorial fish. Juveniles and adults have completely different patterns (spectacular metamorphosis). Assertive with other large angelfish. Eats sponges and tunicates.

Feeding

Omnivore with spongivorous tendency. In the wild: sponges, tunicates, algae. In aquariums: spirulina, nori, mysis, brine shrimp, sponge-based foods (New Life Spectrum), high-quality marine flakes and pellets.

Breeding

Oviparous. Pelagic spawning at dusk. Does not reproduce in home aquariums. Protogynous hermaphrodite.

Care Notes

Very large aquarium (minimum 600 L). Varied diet with a sponge component. DO NOT keep in reef tanks (it eats soft corals and sponges). Quarantine recommended. Juvenile‑to‑adult metamorphosis takes 2–3 years. Juvenile specimens are more adaptable.

Compatibility

Not reef safe with soft corals, LPS, and sponges. Semi-aggressive toward other large angelfish. Compatible with robust fish in very large tanks. Must be the only large angel.
