About

The Cleaner Wrasse is one of the most important organisms on coral reefs. Its ecological role of removing parasites from other fish makes it untouchable even by predators. In aquariums, its cleaning function can help control parasites, but most die of starvation as they do not accept artificial foods.

Behavior & Temperament

Obligatory cleaner fish that removes parasites and dead tissue from other fish. It establishes cleaning stations in the aquarium. Larger fish present themselves to be cleaned. Protogynous hermaphrodite.

Feeding

VERY specialized diet. In the wild: exclusively parasites, mucus and dead tissue from other fish. In aquariums: difficult to feed, may accept mysis, brine shrimp and frozen foods, but many die of starvation.

Breeding

Oviparous. Protogynous hermaphrodite (female to male). The dominant male maintains a harem. If removed, the dominant female turns into a male. Breeding in captivity is rare.

Care Notes

NOT RECOMMENDED for most aquariums. High mortality in captivity due to starvation. If acquiring: offer mysis, artemia and varied foods frequently. Mature aquarium with diverse fauna. Consider ethical alternatives.

Compatibility

Peaceful with all reef fish. In fact, it is beneficial as it removes parasites from tank mates. All fish tolerate it, including predators.
