Eartheater Jurupari
Satanoperca jurupari
Water Parameters
About
Fascinating eartheater cichlid that constantly sifts the substrate, filtering food particles through its gills. The common name “Jurupari” comes from Tupi‑Guarani. Its feeding behavior is unique and hypnotic.
Behavior & Temperament
Large, peaceful cichlid that spends most of its time sifting the substrate for food. Social, best kept in groups.
Feeding
Benthic omnivore - constantly sifts sand. Sinking foods, brine shrimp, bloodworms, sinking pellets. Eats organic debris from substrate.
Breeding
Larvophilic mouthbrooder. Spawns on substrate and moves eggs/larvae to the mouth. Complex breeding in captivity.
Care Notes
Fine sand substrate REQUIRED (never coarse gravel – it damages the gills). Spacious aquarium with open areas. Robust plants or potted ones (they will uproot delicate plants). Strong filtration.
Compatibility
Peaceful despite its size. Good with medium to large non-aggressive fish. Avoid very territorial cichlids. Ideal with other eartheaters and surface-dwelling fish.
