Moderately territorial cichlid that inflates a red throat as a bluff to intimidate rivals. More show than actual aggression. Relatively peaceful for a Central American cichlid.
Feeding
Omnivore - flakes, pellets, brine shrimp, bloodworms, shrimp. Accepts dry and frozen foods well.
Breeding
Spawns on substrate (smooth stones, logs). Both parents intensely care for the eggs and fry. Relatively easy to breed.
Care Notes
Aquarium with rocks, driftwood, and open areas. Tolerates a variety of parameters. Substrate of sand or fine gravel. Hardy plants (often dig).
Compatibility
Moderately territorial. Can coexist with fish of similar size that are not excessively aggressive. Avoid very small or very shy species.
