Behavior & Temperament
Specialized predator with a very laterally compressed body. Aggressive and territorial. Known to attack the eyes of prey, although this behavior is rare in captivity.
Feeding
Piscivore. Feed with fish, fillets, shrimp, krill and high-protein pellets. Active predator that needs regular carnivorous feeding.
Breeding
Maternal mouthbrooder. Female carries 50–100 eggs for 21–28 days. Adult males develop spectacular metallic blue coloration.
Care Notes
Large tank with vegetated areas and open spaces. Robust filtration. Do not keep with smaller fish. Varied and carnivorous diet.
Compatibility
Only with large, robust cichlids. Predator of any smaller fish. Avoid keeping with tall-bodied species that stimulate predatory behavior.
