Water Parameters
About
The largest Julidochromis, featuring an impressive black‑and‑white checkerboard pattern. Its behavior is similar to J. ornatus but it’s more robust and territorial.
Behavior & Temperament
Forms strong monogamous pairs. More aggressive and territorial than J. ornatus due to its larger size. Does not swim inverted along rocky surfaces.
Feeding
Omnivore with carnivorous tendency. Accepts flakes, pellets, brine shrimp, mysis and daphnia. Feed several times a day in small portions.
Breeding
Substrate spawner. Deposits eggs in rock cavities. Monogamous pair cares for the fry for weeks. Fry may remain in the parents' territory.
Care Notes
Abundant rocky décor with large crevices. Keep in naturally formed pairs. Stable alkaline water. Do not mix with other Julidochromis.
Compatibility
Compatible with other Tanganyika cichlids of similar size. Avoid other Julidochromis. Good combination with Neolamprologus and Altolamprologus.
