Pike Cichlid
Crenicichla lepidota
Water Parameters
About
Predatory cichlid with an elongated torpedo-shaped body adapted for ambush hunting. One of the most common and hardy species of the genus Crenicichla. Features a caudal ocellus and body spots.
Behavior & Temperament
Agile, territorial predator. Ambushes prey with rapid strikes. Territorial toward conspecifics, but can coexist with fish too large to swallow.
Feeding
Carnivore - small fish, shrimp, aquatic insects. In captivity: brine shrimp, bloodworms, krill, fish pieces. Can be trained to accept carnivore pellets.
Breeding
Spawns in caves or hidden surfaces. Both parents fiercely guard the eggs and fry. Breeding possible in large aquariums.
Care Notes
Aquarium with plenty of hiding spots (driftwood, rocks, PVC tubes). Surface cover desirable. Secure lid mandatory (they jump). Moderate current.
Compatibility
Predator — do NOT keep with small fish that fit in its mouth. Combine with robust cichlids of similar size, large catfish, and hardy bottom dwellers.
