Water Parameters
About
The Purple Tang is one of the most valuable and stunning fish in the marine hobby. Primarily originating from the Red Sea, its intense purple body with a bright yellow tail is mesmerizing. More resistant than many tangs, it is an excellent choice for aquarists with moderate experience.
Behavior & Temperament
Active and assertive fish. Territorial with other tangs, especially zebra tangs (Zebrasoma). Hardier than many tangs. An excellent algae grazer.
Feeding
Herbivore. Primarily plant-based diet: nori algae, spirulina, cooked vegetables. Supplement with mysis and brine shrimp. Continuously grazes algae on live rock.
Breeding
Oviparous. Pelagic spawner. Does not reproduce in home aquariums.
Care Notes
Large tank with live rock for grazing. Diet rich in vegetables. Quarantine recommended. More disease‑resistant than most tangs. High price due to restricted origin (Red Sea).
Compatibility
Semi-aggressive toward other Zebrasoma tangs. Compatible with reef fish of different shape and color. Can coexist with tangs of other genera in large tanks. Excellent algae controller.
