About
Classic Malawi Mbuna with orange‑red variants in females and blue in males. One of the most widespread species in the hobby.
Behavior & Temperament
Aggressive and territorial Mbuna, especially dominant males. Keep in groups with controlled overstocking to spread aggression. Requires many hiding places.
Feeding
Herbivore. Feed mainly with spirulina, veggie flakes and aufwuchs. Animal protein only occasionally. Excess causes Bloat.
Breeding
Maternal mouthbrooder. Female carries 20-40 eggs for 21-28 days. Males have prominent egg spots on the anal fin.
Care Notes
Abundant rocky décor with many cavities. Controlled overpopulation reduces individual aggression. Strict herbivorous diet.
Compatibility
Compatible with other robust mbunas. Avoid shy or much smaller species. Good combination with Pseudotropheus and Melanochromis.
