World's smallest cichlid. Lives in empty snail shells. Forms colonies with a social hierarchy. Territorial around its shell but generally peaceful.
Feeding
Small omnivore. Accepts fine flakes, micro pellets, baby brine shrimp, daphnia and cyclops. Feed in small portions several times a day.
Breeding
Shell brooder. Female deposits eggs inside the shell and both parents protect them. Colonies grow quickly. Clutches of 10-25 eggs.
Care Notes
Fine sand substrate with plenty of snail shells (Neothauma). Alkaline, hard water is required. The tank can be small but must be well‑filtered.
Compatibility
Best kept in a dedicated shell‑dweller aquarium. It can be housed with other shell dwellers such as Lamprologus ocellatus. Avoid large fish.
