Triangle Cichlid
Uaru amphiacanthoides
Water Parameters
About
A large, imposing cichlid, often dubbed the “cousin of the discus” because of its body shape and its habit of feeding fry with skin mucus. Juveniles display a mottled pattern that changes dramatically as they mature.
Behavior & Temperament
Large, social cichlid, relatively peaceful. Forms complex social hierarchies. Best kept in groups of 4–6 individuals.
Feeding
Predominantly herbivore - vegetables (spinach, lettuce, peas, zucchini), spirulina, algae. Supplement with brine shrimp and bloodworms occasionally.
Breeding
Spawns on flat surfaces. Both parents care for the offspring. Fry feed on the parents' skin mucus (similar to discus). Difficult in captivity.
Care Notes
Large aquarium with very soft, acidic water. A vegetable‑rich diet is MANDATORY. Plants will be devoured (use only Anubias and Java Fern). Powerful filtration. Frequent partial water changes.
Compatibility
Peaceful for its size. Excellent companion for discus and other peaceful South American cichlids. Eats soft plants.
