Iconic Tanganyikan cichlid. Black juveniles with white spots, adults with a vertical white or yellow stripe on a dark body. Dramatic transformation.
Behavior & Temperament
Aggressive and territorial. MANDATORY to keep in large colonies (12+) to dilute aggression. Small groups result in death of subordinates. Rigid social hierarchy.
Feeding
Strict herbivore. Feed ONLY with spirulina, veggie flakes and aufwuchs. Animal protein CAUSES fatal bloat in this species. Vegetable diet is mandatory.
Breeding
Maternal mouthbrooder. Female carries 5-15 eggs for 28-35 days. Juveniles have a pattern of white spots on a black background, completely different from the adults.
Care Notes
Large colony required (12+). Diet 100% plant‑based; animal protein is fatal. Stable alkaline water. Frequent, small water changes.
Compatibility
Best in a Tropheus-specific tank. Can be kept with Petrochromis. Avoid mixing different Tropheus species to prevent hybridization.
