Water Parameters
About
One of the most popular African cichlids and a top recommendation for beginners in Malawi aquariums. Vibrant yellow coloration in both sexes.
Behavior & Temperament
One of the more peaceful mbunas, territorial only during breeding. Keep in groups of at least four individuals to spread aggression. Males show intense yellow coloration.
Feeding
Omnivore with herbivorous tendency. Accepts flakes, pellets, spirulina and small invertebrates. In the wild, feeds on invertebrates among rocks.
Breeding
Maternal mouthbrooder. Female carries 10-30 eggs in her mouth for 18-25 days. Reproduction is relatively easy in captivity.
Care Notes
Maintain a stable alkaline pH. Provide décor with many rocks forming caves. Perform weekly partial water changes of 20–30%. Avoid overpopulation.
Compatibility
Compatible with other less aggressive mbunas, peacocks, and haps. Avoid very aggressive mbunas like Melanochromis auratus.
