About

The Maroon Clownfish is the largest of all clownfish, with females reaching up to 15 cm. Its dark reddish-brown body with three white or yellow stripes (in the Gold Stripe variety) is imposing. It has cheek spines (preopercular) that can cause scratches, justifying the name Spine-cheek Anemonefish.

Behavior & Temperament

The largest and most aggressive of the clownfish. Dominant females can be extremely territorial and may even bite the keeper’s hand. They form stable pairs with their host anemone.

Feeding

Omnivore. Accepts marine flakes, pellets, mysis, brine shrimp, chopped shrimp and frozen foods. Voracious appetite, accepts practically any food.

Breeding

Oviparous with parental care. Lays eggs near the anemone. The male tends and cleans the eggs. Breeding possible in an aquarium with an established pair.

Care Notes

Aquarium with a host anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor is preferred). Watch out for the stinging tentacles when handling. Females can be very aggressive – introduce the pair simultaneously. Provide adequate space around the anemone.

Compatibility

Aggressive toward other clownfish and fish invading its territory. May intimidate smaller fish. Keep only as a pair. Compatible with large, robust fish that do not compete for the same space.
