About

One of the first tropical fish introduced to Europe (1869). Extremely hardy, it survives conditions that would kill other fish. Vibrant blue and red coloration. Tolerates cold water (down to 16 °C), often not requiring a heater in many climates.

Behavior & Temperament

Territorial and aggressive, especially males toward each other. May chase smaller fish or those with long fins. Very hardy and adaptable.

Feeding

Omnivore - flakes, pellets, brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, mosquito larvae. Eats practically anything. Excellent larvae controller.

Breeding

Bubble‑nest builder. Male becomes aggressive when guarding the nest. Reproduction is very easy and prolific. One of the first ornamental fish bred in Europe.

Care Notes

Very tolerant of a wide range of parameters. Survives in unheated tanks in temperate climates. Lid required (they jump). No special care needed. Ideal for beginners (as long as kept alone or in a suitable community).

Compatibility

Aggressive toward similar or smaller fish. Males fight fiercely among themselves. Best in a species-specific tank or with fast, robust fish of similar size. Do NOT combine with bettas.
